Evading experiences of psychological distress.
Paper by Bob Withers: A series
There was so much in this paper I did a series.
Part One- Detransitioned male & autogynephilia.
Bear with me, I am not about to argue for the normalisation of a male paraphilia. There are many paths to rejecting your sex and following a path to autogynephilia some have their roots in paternal violence and, real or perceived, maternal rejection. This man was badly let down by those who allowed him to embark on irreversible surgical modifications. If these men were properly diagnosed and counselled to explore the roots of their “identity” they would be saved from harm. Women would also be liberated from the, blatantly sexist, expectation which requires we provide (free) emotional labour to validate males in our single sex spaces.

Part Two-Young people and Puberty Blockers

Here Bob explores the issue of puberty blockers. He covers the impact on patients, prescribed these drugs, and the role of pharmaceutical companies. Which political party has taken 1.5 million from the manufacturer of these drugs and is one of the biggest cheerleaders for the “transgender child”?
Part three-Evading psychological distress.
Bob asks if we are evading psychological distress by labelling troubled children as “transgender” . By doing so we create a medical problem requiring intervention and ignore psychological distress requiring extensive psychotherapy. The underlying issues in these children include internalised homophobia, autism, sexual abuse and social isolation.

Part four- Detransition
Despite attempts to deny, silence and demonise those who detransition it is a growing phenomena. At the time of writing this paper (June 2020) there were 12, 141 on the detrans forum on reddit. As of February 2022, that figure is approaching 26,000.

Part five-Is this sexual lobotomy?
The final piece looks at how young people are being misled into becoming lifelong medical patients.
In this piece Bob explores alternative scenarios for outcomes in children adopting a transgender identity. He uses both real life case studies and some fictional scenarios; based on real clinical experiences but applied to the fictional character Max/Maxine from ITVs “Butterfly”.

Finally he concludes with this observation. This is not just about the parents who are drawn to this solution for their child’s distress. We have to ask ourselves some harsh questions about why society cannot face mental distress.
